What is the official school leaving date this year?
The last Friday in the month of June each year.
What age can a pupil leave school and start work?
If the child's sixteenth birthday falls between 1 September and 31 August they can leave school on
the last Friday in June and can start work any time after that date.
My child is being bullied at school, is there anyone I can talk to about this?
Initially you should contact the school your child attends first to discuss it with them but an Attendance and Pupil Support Officer may be able to help. You can contact an Attendance and Pupil Support Officer at Attendance and Pupil Support.
My child is entitled to free school meals but is excluded from school at lunch-time, who is responsible for providing his/her lunch?
The school should provide your child with a meal which can be a sandwich to be eaten at home. The school does not
have to provide a meal to be eaten in school.
I want to move my child to another school - how do I do this?
Discuss this with your child's headteacher before approaching a new school. The child can only change at the
beginning of a new term, unless there is a significant change of address.
I want to teach my child at home - who can I speak to about this?
If you decide you want to teacher your child at home you need to contact the headteacher at the school your child is registered at first. An Attendance and Pupil Suppor Officer can also advise you what you need to do. You can contact the Attendance and Pupil Support Officers at Attendance and Pupil Support.
How old do children have to be before they can babysit?
The law is unclear, but children under 16 cannot be held responsible for any harm that happens to a child in their
care. Most children under 13 are not mature enough to cope with an emergency. It is the parent who is responsible
for the child.
There are some children outside my house who should be in school - can you come and deal with them?
It is the parent who is responsible for their child being in school. If you can provide a name and address for
the child, the Attendance and Pupil Support Service will check with the school if the child should be there.
I want to complain about my child's school - how do I do this?
You can get details of the school's complaints procedures from the school. You should write to the headteacher,
explaining why you are dissatisfied and request a reply in writing. If you are still dissatisfied, you can write
to the chair of governors, (c/o the school) explaining your concern, asking for an investigation by the
Governors' Complaints Committee. In the unlikely event that the governors Complaints Committee cannot resolve
the problem, the chair of governors will request the local authority to carry out an investigation of your
complaint.
I am still at school and want to get a weekend/holiday job - is this allowed?
This will depend on your age and the type of job you want to do. You must apply for a work permit before you
start doing any type of work and always carry your work permit with you if you under official school leaving
age. You can get advice and application forms from Attendance and Pupil Support.
Can I take my child out of school to go on holiday?
Guidance issued by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) in October 2007 confirms that, as a general rule, children should not be taken out of school for the purposes of a holiday.
All requests from parents for holiday absence must always be made to the school in advance of any holiday being booked. Requests should be made either by using the school's proforma or in writing to the headteacher and in line with the individual schools attendance/absence policy.
How do I find out how to get my child a place at a school?
