History

  1. Camellia House, Yorkshire Sculpture Park
  2. Established in 1977, Yorkshire Sculpture Park was Britain's first permanent sculpture park and has developed an important reputation as a leading international open-air gallery. YSP's 500 acres of historic parkland and gardens were landscaped in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today they provide a rich environment for the best examples of modern and contemporary sculpture by international artists.

The Sculpture Park was started by the current director, Peter Murray OBE, who in the late seventies was leading a postgraduate course in art education at Bretton Hall College. Since then the programme and facilities have expanded and today, visitors are able to enjoy the magnificent YSP Centre, four indoor galleries and nine distinct open-air spaces. An average of ten exhibitions, displays and projects are curated in the indoor and outdoor spaces each year. Usually around half of these involve international artists, some showing in Britain for the first time. In addition, works are displayed from the collection which includes Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink, William Tucker, Lynn Chadwick, Richard Serra, Sol LeWitt, Jonathan Borofsky, Anthony Caro, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Grenville Davey, David Nash, Richard Wentworth, Antony Gormley, GiĆ² Pomodoro and Edward Allington.

Over the last three decades, YSP has organised hundreds of exhibitions by over 500 artists.
