How you can get involved

Why get involved

There are lots of reasons why you might want to get involved in influencing what we do in your area:

  • There may be particular issues which you think are not being addressed
  • You might want to work with other people to improve the area
  • You might want to stay up to date with what's going on locally

KNH wants to know what people think so we can make sure our services are the right ones, delivered in the right way - your views help us do that.

Our commitment to involve you

Our Tenant Participation Charter sets out tenants' and residents' rights to participate in decisions about their communities and the local services they receive. It is a shared commitment between KNH, KFTRA (Kirklees Federation of Tenants' and Residents' Associations)and Kirklees Council and outlines different ways you can get involved and how important it is to us that you do.

Different ways of getting involved

Tenants' and residents' associations (TRAs)

A TRA is a group of people who get together to work to improve the area in which they live. They campaign for better services, improvements to the environment and tenants' homes and organise activities that bring people closer together. KNH works very closely with TRAs in delivering its services and monitoring how well it is doing.

To see if there is a TRA in your area, contact the Community Engagement Team.

If you would like more information or would like to help set up a TRA in your area, contact your Neighbourhood Tenant Participation Officer.

Street Contacts

A Street Contact acts as a point of contact for their Estate Management Officer or other KNH officers working in that area who want to discuss local issues or developments where there isn't a TRA. They play an essential role in keeping us up to date and in helping us get messages out to residents. They also take part in quarterly estate inspections.

If you would like more information or would like to become a Street Contact, contact your Neighbourhood Tenant Participation Officer.

Tenant Committees

TRAs and Street Contacts attend the Tenant Committees to represent the views and best interests of people living in their areas to KNH. They are able to influence important decisions made by the Board and are often key in making sure that new developments are realistic and practical.

Area Forums

Area Forums are more informal meetings where TRA representatives and Street Contacts can influence priorities for estate improvements and work with KNH on further ideas to make their estate a better place to live.

Focus groups and forums

KNH holds a range of discussion groups on particular issues with tenants and residents who have an interest in that area for example on sheltered housing or on leaseholder issues.

Conferences

The Service Planning Conference and the Investment Conference are annual events where tenant and resident representatives can influence the direction of the organisation and how it sets its budgets.

Board of Directors

KNH is managed by a Board of Directors which is responsible for making key decisions about the management of housing services and investment in tenants' homes. The Board consists of five tenant directors, four of who are elected by tenants and one who is nominated by KFTRA; five councillors; and five independents with relevant housing, business or community skills and knowledge.

Estate inspections

Each estate is inspected at least once every three months by the Estate Management Officer and TRA representatives or Street Contacts. They check the general tidiness and cleanliness of the area.

Community events

KNH organises a range of events and activities throughout the year to consult with residents and to celebrate success stories, for example improvements on the estate or achievements of the residents.

If you would like to find out more about any of these things or would like to get involved, please contact the Community Engagement Team.

Who you can talk to about getting involved

  • Neighbourhood Tenant Participation Officers (NTPO)
Each neighbourhood has a NTPO who can tell you about the opportunities available near you. They work with local tenants and residents groups, Street Contacts, help organise events and activities and help people gain more confidence so they are able to get their voice heard.
  • The Community Engagement Team
This central team is responsible for the overall approach to how we involve residents and tenants, looking at new initiatives and monitoring what we currently do.
  • Kirklees Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations (KFTRA)
KFTRA is an independent organisation run by tenants and residents associations to provide independent support to tenants groups.
