Participants taking part in the cycle recycling scheme
Cllr Martyn Bolt, Kirklees Cabinet member for Transport and Green Issues, is one of the scheme’s biggest supporters and was on hand to congratulate the young participants who will soon be working hard to restore and recycle bikes collected from council refuse sites.
Cycle-re-Cycle Deighton is a joint initiative between Longley High School and Crank It Up Cycling for All. Students from the school will work alongside volunteers from Crank it Up and teachers from the woodwork department to learn about repairing and rebuilding bikes. Once finished students will be able to keep the bikes and will be encouraged to join local cycling groups including Kirklees Bike Users Group (KBUG) and STC Kirklees in order to develop their interest and promote a healthy lifestyle through cycling.
“The students have shown tremendous interest in this project with a waiting list already forming” says Chris Evans from Crank It Up. “The award has allowed us to buy some much needed tools and get the whole process under way and we are delighted that O2 It’s Your Community has given their support.” Crank It Up have already received enquiries from other towns to set up similar projects and are busily trying to keep up in demand.
“This is a truly innovative project,” said O2’s Tauheedul Ali. “I am delighted It’s Your Community has been able to get involved. “The awards are designed to make a difference to communities all over the UK by providing the funds to get ideas off the ground,” he explained. “We want to build a network of projects across the country that collectively makes a difference. Applying for an It’s Your Community award is simple and fast, just log on to www.itsyourcommunity.co.uk get inspired and see what you can do.”
