Have your say on the future of Dewsbury

Dewsbury people are being given a major say in the future of their town.

A new project, led by Kirklees Council and Yorkshire Forward, is seeking views on how Dewsbury should move forward, tackle challenges and unlock its potential over the next few years.

The Dewsbury Renaissance scheme is already involving people who live, work and shop in the town with the aim of highlighting the best chances for regeneration and development.

Residents, councillors and community groups are also giving their opinions ahead of a wider consultation starting next month.

The goal is to agree a vision for Dewsbury that will help to attract investment and ensure it is a vibrant place for residents and visitors alike.

Anyone can get involved in the Renaissance project, which is being run by the council, development agency Yorkshire Forward and a team led by architects Bauman Lyons.

Cllr Mehboob Khan, Leader of Kirklees Council, said: “This is a great opportunity to develop new ideas and give Dewsbury the bright future it deserves.

“We will continue focusing on vital matters such as the market refurbishment and protection of Pioneer House, but the Renaissance project will complement all the work already going on.

“Alongside our partners, Yorkshire Forward, and the people of the town, we are determined to make a real difference and a lasting impact.

“This project is seeking honest opinions about shaping the future – Dewsbury is a place of huge potential and I strongly believe we can look ahead with confidence.”

A ‘town team’ will be formed early next year comprising members of the local community and representatives from groups and businesses.

Cllr Paul Kane, Chair of the Dewsbury Regeneration Board, said: “The Renaissance project will allow the people of Dewsbury to discuss and agree on how we see the future of the town. I hope as many people as possible will get involved.

“The regeneration process takes time and we realise there are several issues that we need to address but, with support from the people of this town, we can start down the road.”

Ken Gillespie, director of regeneration at Kirklees Council, said: “We acknowledge that the Renaissance work cannot solve every problem, but it’s something in which the local community can have a big influence.

“We are looking to ensure Dewsbury is an attractive place to live, work and visit for many years to come – working closely with Yorkshire Forward, and with the chance to access funding to support us, this is an important step.”

A programme of consultation events will be taking place over the coming months, allowing as many people as possible to have their say.

Irena Bauman, of Bauman Lyons, said: "Dewsbury is a beautiful place with an exceptional diversity of people.

“We hope that the process of developing the strategic development framework for the town centre will create greater understanding of the potential of its people and lead to unity of purpose to improve the quality of
life for all."
