Children can fire water squirters, empty water down chutes into the pool and play with the fill and splash elements of this exciting, custom-built installation - the only one of its kind in Kirklees.

The Splash Factory and the feature lighting around the small pool form the centrepiece of the recently completed project to refurbish and modernise the swimming pools and changing rooms. The pools reopened to the public on Monday 19 July at the end of the second phase of a £5.26m programme to modernise and upgrade the sports facilities at the centre. A 3rd and final phase of the refurbishment is now underway to complete the refurbishment, with the final phase due to be completed in October 2010. Kirklees Council has invested £2.75m into the developments alongside the grant award of £2.37m from the government and a contribution from Kirklees Active Leisure.

Children have been delighted by the new fun water feature. Jemima Halliwell (5) said, “It’s brilliant especially when I got to pour the water out of the buckets. My friends thought it was good too.” Her sister Keziah (7) said ”It’s excellent – I like it when all the water comes down from the sharks. I didn’t want to get out.”

Cllr Mehboob Khan, leader of the Council said, ”The Splash factory is a fabulous new addition to the swimming facilities at Batley and should prove to be a real winner with young children.

“The Batley Swimming Initiative has seen the development of a modern leisure facility designed to meet the needs of the local communities and increase the number of people who will enjoy the benefits of high quality, accessible and attractive facilities.”

“Batley and the surrounding area has a number of significant health issues and this project coupled with programmes to encourage and motivate people of all ages and swimming abilities to swim regularly and to get active should see a significant impact on the health of the people in this area.”

Alasdair Brown, Chief Executive of Kirklees Active Leisure, said,” This project is a further fantastic example of the Council and KAL working together in an effective partnership to deliver a much improved local facility that people will, I’m sure, use and enjoy for many years to come. The considerable investment into Batley Sports and Tennis Centre has enabled the Council and KAL to provide a more attractive, welcoming environment to our customers, encouraging use by new users, improving customer satisfaction and increasing participation in swimming and pool based activities.”
